Hope in Dark Times

In this generative course, students will explore their individual, communal, and political experiences with hope. We will read and discuss the work of modern poets, including Lucille Clifton, Franny Choi, Cameron Awkward-Rich, Adam Zagajewski, Joy Harjo, Ruth Awad and Ross Gay. This is a generative class where students will be guided through writing exercises inspired by the texts and class discussions. Download reading list.

Fork, Knife, and Pen: Reading and Writing Our Relationship with Food

In this course, we will read and discuss work that sits at the intersections of food, community, politics, grief, and joy. Reading list includes Joy Harjo, Jane Wong, Ellen Bass, Kaveh Akbar, Donika Kelly, and Kate Lebo. This is a generative class where students will be guided through writing exercises inspired by the texts and class discussions. All writing genres and levels are welcome. Download reading list.

Finding Your Poetic Voice

In this course, we will read the work of modern poets and practice writing in a variety of poetic forms, including sonnets, abecedarians, prose poems, burning haibuns, and golden shovels. We will participate in guided writing exercises, share our early drafts, and provide positive feedback to our peers. Finally, we will explore various brainstorming practices, including the compost heap and florilegium. Come prepared to write, write, write. Download reading list.
